What the world needs now, probably more than it has for some time, is more freaky art. Disturbingly beautiful, uncomfortably familiar art. English 4AD artist Pixx combines the absurd, the vulgar, and the beauty in her latest video “I Bow Down”, from her 2016 LP The Age of Anxiety. There is an almost Kraut-ish detachment in the feel of the music, but the vocal delivery and lyrics come off as very personal and even vulnerable, especially when compared with her reverb-soaked 4AD label-mates of previous eras. The video itself harkens back to the absurdism and playfulness New Order’s “True Faith” video, but ventures into darker, more disturbing reflection on multiple incarnations of the self and personal image.
